Emergency Preparedness
Public Health Emergency Preparedness
The Calhoun County Health Department is committed to protecting the health and safety of our community before, during, and after emergencies. Through ongoing planning, training, and collaboration, we work to ensure Calhoun County is prepared to respond effectively to public health threats and natural or man-made disasters.
We collaborate closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health, neighboring county health departments, regional emergency planning groups, Calhoun County Commissioners, Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), local first responders, healthcare partners, and community organizations to strengthen preparedness and response efforts across the county.
The Health Department receives annual federal funding through the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) and Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) programs. These funds support our ability to:
Develop and maintain emergency response plans
Conduct training and exercises with local partners
Strengthen disease surveillance and communication systems
Coordinate mass vaccination or medication dispensing clinics when needed
Ensure rapid response to outbreaks, natural disasters, and other public health emergencies
Our goal is to ensure a coordinated, timely, and effective response that protects the health of our residents and minimizes the impact of emergencies on our community.
Types of Emergencies We Plan For
The Health Department prepares for a wide range of public health emergencies, including:
Infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics
Severe weather events such as flooding and storms
Hazardous materials incidents
Foodborne illness outbreaks
Mass vaccination or medication distribution events
Bioterrorism or other intentional public health threats
Preparedness planning includes coordination with emergency response partners and participation in drills and exercises to test and strengthen response capabilities.
Our Emergency Response Approach
During a public health emergency, the Health Department works within established emergency management systems to ensure clear communication, defined roles, and coordinated action. We collaborate with local and state partners to:
Monitor and assess emerging health threats
Provide timely public information and guidance
Implement control measures to protect public health
Support community recovery efforts
How Residents Can Prepare
Community preparedness is a shared responsibility. Residents are encouraged to:
Sign up for local emergency alerts
Maintain an emergency supply kit at home
Develop a family emergency communication plan
Follow official information from the Health Department and county officials
Stay up to date on recommended vaccinations
Taking simple steps ahead of time can significantly reduce the impact of an emergency on your family and the community.
